If you’re looking to grow your own murashige avocados trees in your backyard, chances are that you’ve heard of the Murashige avocado tree variety. This variety is named after the man who developed it, Shigeo Murashige, and was first grown in Hawaii in the 1950s.

How to Select

Since murashige avocados are unripe when they’re picked, it’s important to select fruit that is not soft or bruised. The skin should have a dark-green hue and should appear glossy but dull under close inspection; murashiges won’t develop their typical green sheen until they ripen on your counter. As always, give an avocado a gentle squeeze—it should feel firm but not hard.

How to Store Murashige Avocados

When avocados are ripe, their skin turns almost black and gives off a fruity aroma. Cut fruit into halves or quarters and remove pits. Use immediately or place in a bowl of water with 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice per quart to prevent darkening. Leave in water until ready to use. Frozen avocados may be kept for up to 6 months; thaw before using. To ripen avocados more quickly, store them in a paper bag at room temperature for several days.

How to Prepare

When you buy a murashige avocado, make sure it feels firm but yields slightly to your touch. If it doesn’t yield, chances are there is bruising or damage to its flesh—which affects flavor and texture. Once you get home, store your fruit in a plastic bag in your fridge’s crisper drawer (the one with a temperature of around 38 degrees). As with most fruits, ripe avocados last up to five days at room temperature and about two weeks when refrigerated.

How to Enjoy

You can grow a healthy Murashige avocado tree by planting an avocado pit directly into potting soil. This avocado tree grows best in areas with temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The fruit matures quickly and can be harvested in late spring and early summer months. Once ripe, however, these avocados will not stay fresh for long so you should use them soon after harvest.

Health Benefits of Avocado

The avocado is a delicious and versatile fruit with numerous health benefits. It is filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and beneficial fats. While there are many different varieties of avocados, most of them contain similar nutrients. Read on to learn more about what’s so great about murashige avocados!
